But the 3 full fights that I do have illustrate the journey from utter incompetence to competence rather well. Technically because one of those recordings is the last 15 seconds of the fight so that it could be gif’ed. I’ve fought the Demons 5 times now with (technically) 4 recordings saved. With this piece of writing I’m going to reflect on one of my own journeys of getting better, featuring the Demon Prince from the Dark Souls III DLC The Ringed City. And the progress from “how in the hell do I dodge that?!” to “that’s it, you go for that” before the perfect dodge gives one ample opportunity to finish of the foe at your leisure is beautiful. But there’s progress and that’s all good. Sometimes that progress is quick, and at other times it’s incremental. Attacks that were once fled are now punished. Moves that once caused so many problems are simply waved away. And boss fights are perhaps the purest form of this journey. Video games are a medium that shows this journey in a very clear manner. The journey from sheer ineptness to competency is a rather rewarding one.
